What typical day?
« So what does a typical day working on the farm looks like ? », you might ask. Well, a « typical day » doesn’t really exist for me.
Sure, there are « chores » on the farm, meaning some things that need to be done every day, no matter what - like feeding the animals. And I help with that on the weekend, when we have less staff on the farm (there are 12 of us during the week, but only 2-4 people on the weekends unless it’s absolutely necessary, like when we are cutting grass or harvesting).
But for me, everyday is different, and I love that about being a farmer. For example: this week, I’ve worked on finding the right packaging for some farm merch; checked the deliveries of waste we have had on the biogas plant; read about the chemistry, physics and microbiology of cheese (this book); filmed some videos for the farm’s Instagram and edited some reels; put up some shelves in the dairy, and today I milked some cows and fed the calfs.
I expect things will be a bit different once the cheese dairy is up and running, but a farmer’s work is and always will be multidimensional, which makes it incredibly interesting, but also, sometimes, incredibly frustratring.
You just have to learn how to juggle.
