the summer garden

We’ve had the first proper days of heat, and the garden now feels like a true summer garden. I spent a bit of time there after dinner tonight to water the plants, take out a few weeds and check on seedlings, and even though it’s nothing extraordinary, I always feel better after spending some time there. There is something in the air after a hot day like today, a smell in the garden that embodies summer.

I’m (im)patiently waiting for the seedling to grow, but what’s done is done and I can just make sure they have enough water, and then wait for them to sprout. On evenings like today, I wish I had planted a full, lush garden, with plenty of flowers and vegetables. But you only reap what you sow, right?

That’s the beauty of it, in a way: you have to make do with what you’ve been given and the effort you’ve put in, and accept that at some point you took the best decision you could with the information you had at the time. Which, by the way, is also a good reminder of what farming is like.
